In an emergency, every minute counts. Those who know the warning signs and have practiced using them can react faster.

Recognizing Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of an allergic reaction. Common triggers include insect stings, foods such as peanuts or tree nuts, and certain medications. Symptoms often begin within minutes of contact, and multiple organ systems are frequently affected simultaneously.

  • Hives, itching, redness or swelling of the lips, tongue and throat
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, hoarseness or tightness in the throat
  • Dizziness, rapid heartbeat, drop in blood pressure leading to unconsciousness
  • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps

This is how the pen is used

If a severe reaction is suspected, the auto-injector should be used immediately to inject the medication into the outer thigh, if necessary through clothing. The exact procedure differs between EpiPen and Jext, for example, regarding the protective cap and holding time.

  • Know the operating instructions for your specific model and practice using it regularly.
  • Instruct family members, school or workplace
  • If the symptoms do not improve after 5 to 15 minutes, a second pen can be used.
