What you should know about cortisone

Oral cortisone works throughout the body and is used to treat many inflammatory diseases. Close medical supervision is particularly important during prolonged use.

What is cortisone?

Cortisone is the common name for glucocorticoids. A related hormone, cortisol, is produced naturally by the body in the adrenal cortex. It influences, among other things, metabolism, blood pressure, and the immune system. Artificially produced drugs such as prednisolone and dexamethasone have a similar effect but suppress inflammation much more effectively.

  • Spray, cream or drops: They are most effective where they are applied.
  • Tablets: They affect the whole body (systemically)

Tablets are primarily considered when local treatment is insufficient or when multiple organs are affected.

What are cortisone tablets used for?

According to the product information, prednisolone and dexamethasone are used to treat many inflammatory, allergic, and autoimmune diseases, for example:

  • severe asthma attacks and severe allergic diseases
  • rheumatic diseases and other autoimmune diseases
  • severe inflammatory skin diseases

Prednisolone is also used, for example, in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, while dexamethasone is used for cerebral edema or to combat nausea during chemotherapy. With prolonged use, additional side effects may include a rounded face, thin skin, muscle weakness, bone loss, and glaucoma or cataracts. Cortisone weakens the immune system and can mask signs of infection.

Caution is advised for individuals with conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, osteoporosis, glaucoma, and mental health disorders. When used in combination with painkillers like ibuprofen, the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding increases.

After prolonged use, cortisone should never be stopped suddenly.

When should you see a doctor immediately?

Do I need a prescription for cortisone tablets?

Yes. Prednisolone and dexamethasone are prescription-only medications. A licensed physician will review your questionnaire to determine if a prescription is medically appropriate. Both are glucocorticoids with a similar mechanism of action. The main differences lie in their duration of action and the dosage required for the same effect. Dexamethasone has a long duration of action and is effective even at low milligram doses; therefore, it is available in 0,5 mg and 4 mg tablets. Prednisolone is available as a 5 mg tablet. The doctor will decide which active ingredient is most appropriate.

Many side effects increase with dose and duration. Even with a short course of treatment, increased appetite, sleep disturbances, restlessness, mood swings, stomach problems, and elevated blood sugar are possible.
