ADHD begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. A thorough diagnosis is essential for any treatment.

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological developmental disorder. Symptoms begin in childhood and persist into adulthood for many affected individuals. Typical symptoms include:

  • Inattentiveness, forgetfulness, and difficulty organizing tasks
  • inner restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Impulsivity, such as acting rashly or interrupting others

In adults, hyperactivity often manifests more as inner restlessness. Concentration problems alone do not necessarily mean ADHD. Lack of sleep, stress, depression, anxiety disorders, or thyroid diseases can also cause similar symptoms.

Diagnosis by a specialist

The diagnosis is made by a specialist, for example in psychiatry and psychotherapy, neurology, or child and adolescent psychiatry. These include:

  • a detailed discussion about the current situation and childhood
  • standardized questionnaires, often supplemented by information from relatives
  • the exclusion of other causes through physical and psychological examination

According to the product information, treatment with Elvanse must be started under the supervision of a specialist experienced in the treatment of ADHD. An online questionnaire cannot replace this diagnosis.

Treatment and narcotics law

Treatment for ADHD includes medication, psychoeducation, psychotherapy, and coaching. Lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse) is a stimulant and is used as part of such a comprehensive approach.

  • Germany: Lisdexamfetamine is a narcotic and may only be prescribed on a special narcotics prescription.
  • Switzerland: The regulations of the Narcotics Act apply, including those concerning prescription and dispensing.

Whether a prescription is possible under these conditions is examined by the doctor on a case-by-case basis.

Side effects and warning signs

Common symptoms include decreased appetite, weight loss, sleep disturbances, dry mouth, headaches, and increased pulse or blood pressure. Therefore, blood pressure, pulse, weight, and mental well-being are monitored regularly. If heart disease or sudden cardiac death is known in the family, a particularly thorough examination is necessary before starting treatment.

Call emergency services 112 (Switzerland: 144) if you experience chest pain, fainting, or a rapid heartbeat with shortness of breath. Seek immediate medical help if you experience hallucinations, delusions, unusual elation, severe anxiety, or aggression.

Everyday life with ADHD

Structure helps in everyday life

Medication can alleviate symptoms, but it doesn't solve all the challenges of daily life. Many adults with ADHD also benefit from structured routines and strategies, such as those taught in psychoeducation, behavioral therapy, or coaching. The environment also plays a role: when partners, family, or employers understand the specific characteristics of ADHD, misunderstandings and conflicts are often easier to resolve. Self-help groups also offer the opportunity to connect with others who are affected.

  • Break tasks down into small steps, use calendars and reminders consistently.
  • Regular sleep, exercise and regular meals (stimulants can suppress appetite)
  • Abstain from alcohol and drugs and never give medication to others.

Can I get Elvanse without an ADHD diagnosis?

No. Elvanse is only intended for the treatment of diagnosed ADHD. The diagnosis must be made by a specialist and cannot be replaced by an online questionnaire. Please have any relevant medical reports or findings available so that the examining physician can assess your situation.

Lisdexamfetamine is converted in the body to dexamphetamine, which has a potential for abuse and addiction. In Germany, a special narcotics prescription is therefore required; in Switzerland, the regulations of the Narcotics Act apply. These regulations cover prescribing and dispensing, as well as carrying the drug when traveling abroad.

Because lisdexamfetamine is only activated in the body, its effects set in gradually, after about 1,5 to 2 hours in studies. The effects last throughout the day, up to about 13 hours in studies. Therefore, Elvanse is taken once daily in the morning.

Before starting treatment, your cardiovascular health, blood pressure, pulse, and any pre-existing mental health conditions will be assessed. During treatment, your blood pressure, pulse, weight, appetite, and mental well-being will be monitored regularly. The benefits of the treatment should also be reassessed by your doctor at regular intervals. Inform your doctor about any new symptoms or additional medications you are taking.

It is best to avoid alcohol during treatment. Elvanse can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and visual disturbances, which may impair your ability to drive, especially at the beginning of treatment. Discuss with your doctor whether and when you can safely drive again.
