What you should know about the morning-after pill

The morning-after pill is a method for emergency contraception and not a regular form of birth control. The sooner it is taken, the more likely it is to prevent pregnancy.

How does the morning-after pill work?

The morning-after pill delays or prevents ovulation. This prevents fertilization by sperm, which can survive in the body for several days. If ovulation has already occurred, the pill is ineffective.

  • Levonorgestrel (Norlevo): Take within 72 hours afterwards
  • Ulipristal acetate (ellaOne): Take within 120 hours afterwards

The morning-after pill is not an abortion pill and does not terminate an existing pregnancy. It also does not prevent all pregnancies and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Application and time window

The morning-after pill is an option after unprotected sex or a contraceptive failure, for example, a broken condom or forgotten birth control pills. The tablet can be taken on any day of the menstrual cycle.

  • Take as early as possible, within the time window of the active ingredient.
  • If vomiting occurs within 3 hours, take another tablet quickly.
  • Use condoms in addition to your regular contraception until your next period, even if you are using hormonal contraception.

If your period is late or you have signs of pregnancy, you should take a pregnancy test beforehand. The morning-after pill is only intended for occasional use.

Side effects and cautions

Common symptoms include headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, dizziness, and fatigue. The next period may arrive sooner or later, and spotting is also possible. These symptoms usually resolve on their own.

Certain medications for epilepsy, tuberculosis, or HIV, as well as St. John's wort, can weaken the effectiveness of the morning-after pill, even if it has been up to four weeks since they were taken. Caution is advised in cases of severe liver disease and during breastfeeding. The morning-after pill may be less effective in people with higher body weight; however, the data on this is inconclusive.
