If warning signs such as severe pain or blurred vision occur, an ophthalmological examination is necessary. Your doctor will determine whether the ointment is suitable for you.

What you should know about eye infections and glaucoma

A red eye has many causes, and not all of them can be treated with antibiotics. Glaucoma, on the other hand, often causes no symptoms for a long time and requires regular eye exams.

Red eye: bacterial, viral, or allergic?

Conjunctivitis is a common cause of a red eye. The symptoms provide clues to the cause:

  • Bacterial: yellowish, purulent discharge and sticky eyelids in the morning, often starting in one eye.
  • Viral: Watery tears and a foreign body sensation, often accompanied by a cold
  • Allergic: Severe itching of both eyes, often during pollen season

Antibiotics only work against bacteria. Mild bacterial conjunctivitis often heals on its own within about a week. More on allergic symptoms: Hay fever and allergies.

Glaucoma: long period without symptoms

In glaucoma, the optic nerve is gradually damaged. An important risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure; others include advanced age, a family history of glaucoma, and high myopia. The common open-angle glaucoma is painless. Visual field defects are often noticed only at a late stage and do not resolve on their own.

The ophthalmologist makes the diagnosis, using methods including pressure measurement, examination of the optic nerve, and visual field testing. If only the pressure is elevated, without damage to the optic nerve, it is called ocular hypertension. Treatment usually involves long-term use of pressure-lowering eye drops, often laser therapy, and sometimes surgery.

Side effects and use

Eye medications primarily work where they are applied. A brief burning sensation or blurred vision is common immediately after application. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision is clear.

  • Chloramphenicol: Very rarely, damage to blood formation occurs; therefore, use should only be for short periods.
  • Ofloxacin and Fucithalmic: Eye irritation or allergic reactions
  • Lumigan: Possible side effects include reddened eyes, longer and darker eyelashes, darker skin around the eye, sunken-looking eyes, and a browner iris, which is likely to remain.

Depending on the preparation, there should be a 5- to 15-minute interval between the application of two eye medications; an ointment should be applied last. Contact lenses should not be worn during an eye infection.

Warning signs: When immediate help is needed

Some eye problems cannot be assessed online. Seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist or emergency room if:

  • the eye hurts severely, is very sensitive to light, vision deteriorates significantly, or the cornea appears cloudy.
  • A red, painful eye occurs when wearing contact lenses
  • an injury or a foreign body in the eye
  • Blisters appear on the forehead or nose, the skin around the eye swells painfully, or fever develops.

Sudden, severe eye and headaches accompanied by nausea and colored rings around lights may indicate an acute glaucoma attack. Then immediately call the emergency number 112 (Switzerland: 144). After a chemical burn, immediately rinse the eye with plenty of water and also call emergency services.

In everyday life

Use eye medications correctly

For an eye medication to work effectively, proper application is crucial. Using more drops than prescribed offers no benefit, as excess fluid will simply run out of the eye. After instilling the drops, keep your eye closed briefly to ensure more of the medication remains in the eye. Bacterial conjunctivitis is contagious, so hygiene is especially important.

  • Wash your hands before and after each use and do not touch the tip of the bottle or tube with your eye, eyelids or fingers.
  • Use your own towels and pillowcases and do not share eye medication with others.
  • Note the date the medication was opened and do not save any leftovers after the end of an antibiotic treatment for later use.

For glaucoma, a consistent routine is helpful, such as using eye drops in the evening while brushing your teeth. A list of all eye drops makes each eye examination easier. Do I need a prescription for these eye medications?

Yes. All medications in this category require a prescription. A licensed physician will review your questionnaire to determine if a prescription is medically appropriate. If the eye does not improve after 2 to 3 days of treatment, or if it worsens, an ophthalmological examination is necessary.

A diagnosis of glaucoma can only be determined by an examination by an ophthalmologist. Lumigan is not approved for use on longer eyelashes.
