What you should know about chlamydia

A chlamydia infection often goes unnoticed. Those who recognize it and treat it completely protect themselves and others.

Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) are bacteria transmitted through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Many infected individuals, especially women, experience no symptoms. Possible signs include:

  • Spotting or bleeding between episodes and pain during sexual intercourse
  • Pain in the lower abdomen or testicles, discomfort in the anus

If left untreated, the infection can spread and, for example, inflame the fallopian tubes or epididymis. This can impair fertility.

Testing and treatment

Chlamydia is detected with a laboratory test (PCR) of urine or a swab. Since other sexually transmitted infections are often present at the same time, testing for gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis is often also advisable.

Treatment involves antibiotics:

  • Doxycycline: Tablets are usually taken over seven days.
  • Azithromycin (Zithromax): For uncomplicated infections, as a single dose

Complete the full course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms subside sooner. A repeat test after approximately three months is recommended, as reinfections are common.

Partner and sex during treatment

To prevent reinfection, your sexual partners from the last few months should also be informed, tested and treated, even if they have no symptoms.

Abstain from sex until the treatment is complete:

  • with azithromycin up to seven days after taking it
