What you should know about genital warts

Genital warts are unpleasant, but usually harmless. Patience and careful application are part of the treatment.

Genital warts are most often caused by HPV types 6 and 11. The viruses are primarily transmitted through skin-to-skin and mucous membrane contact during sexual activity. Weeks to months can pass between infection and the appearance of visible warts.

The most suitable method depends on the number, size, and location of the warts. While the treatment removes visible warts, the virus can remain in the body. Therefore, relapses are possible.

Side effects and application tips

Both medications often irritate the treated skin: redness, burning, itching, swelling, or small sores are typical. Flu-like symptoms can also occur with imiquimod.

  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after application.
  • Treat only the warts, avoiding healthy skin as much as possible.
  • Uncircumcised men with warts under the foreskin: retract the foreskin daily during imiquimod treatment and clean the skin underneath.

If skin reactions are very severe, consult a doctor. Keep the product out of the reach of children.

If warts appear in the genital area for the first time and the diagnosis is uncertain, have them examined locally. This is especially important if:

  • Warts are located in the urethra, vagina, on the cervix or in the anus

Take HPV calmly

HPV is very common: Most sexually active people become infected at some point in their lives, often without realizing it. Therefore, genital warts don't tell you much about when or from whom you were infected. New warts can also appear after successful treatment.

  • Condoms reduce the risk of transmission, but do not provide complete protection, as uncovered skin can also be affected.
  • An HPV vaccination that covers types 6 and 11 can prevent genital warts; it does not treat existing warts.
  • Genital warts recur more frequently in people who smoke and have a weakened immune system.

Are genital warts dangerous?

Genital warts themselves are usually benign. HPV types 6 and 11, which most commonly cause them, are considered low-risk. Since other HPV types can cause cell changes, any unusual, bleeding, or changing skin lesions should be examined by a doctor. Women should also undergo regular cancer screenings.

As long as Aldara cream is on your skin, you should abstain from all sexual contact, as the cream can weaken condoms and diaphragms. Treated skin is also often irritated. Since genital warts are contagious, it is advisable to abstain from sex until they have healed, or at least to use condoms.

Treatment is only necessary if your partner has warts. Since HPV is often transmitted unnoticed, an examination can still be advisable. Talk openly with each other, as genital warts can appear long after infection and reveal little about the source of the infection.

This is possible. The medications eliminate visible warts, but the virus can remain in the skin. Relapses occur primarily in the first few months after treatment. If new warts appear, have them examined by a doctor again. The treatment can then be adjusted.
