What you should know about oral thrush

Oral thrush develops when yeast fungi multiply excessively on the oral mucosa, often in people with a weakened immune system. If it occurs without any apparent reason or repeatedly, the cause should be investigated by a doctor.

What is oral thrush?

Candida yeast fungi are present in the mouths of many people without being noticed. If the balance of the oral flora is disrupted, they can multiply rapidly and trigger an infection (candidiasis). Typical symptoms include:

  • white, wipeable coatings on the tongue, cheek lining or palate
  • a reddened, sometimes slightly bleeding underside

How do antifungal medications work?

  • Nystatin (Nystan): It acts locally on the mucous membrane and is hardly absorbed into the bloodstream.
  • Fluconazole (Diflucan): It is ingested and reaches mucous membranes and saliva via the bloodstream.
