Which shape would fit?

What you should know about menopause

Menopause is a natural phase of life, not an illness. If symptoms significantly impact daily life, hormone replacement therapy may be an option after careful consideration of the benefits and risks.

What happens during menopause?

During menopause (climacteric), the ovaries gradually produce less and less estrogen. The final period is called menopause and usually occurs around the age of 50. Typical symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances, mood swings and irritability
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sexual intercourse

The severity and duration of symptoms vary considerably. Furthermore, bone loss increases with declining estrogen levels, raising the risk of osteoporosis.

How does hormone replacement therapy work?

Hormone replacement therapy compensates for estrogen deficiency with estradiol, which is identical to the body's own hormone. The goal is to alleviate symptoms that significantly impair daily life.

  • Östrogen: as a patch, gel, spray or tablet
  • Progestin: It protects the uterine lining in women with a uterus, available as a standalone preparation or in a combination tablet.

Estrogen alone increases the risk of uterine cancer in women with a uterus. Some preparations are also used to prevent osteoporosis in women with a high risk of uterine rupture, when other methods are not suitable. Hormone replacement therapy does not prevent pregnancy.

Side effects and risks

Common side effects include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea, and spotting or breakthrough bleeding, especially in the first few months. Patches, gels, and sprays can irritate the skin at the application site.

Hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of breast cancer, blood clots, and stroke. The risk of blood clots is highest during the first year of treatment. It is not suitable for patients with breast cancer (including those with a history of breast cancer), after a blood clot in a vein, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or acute liver disease. Femoston and Femoston Conti are also not suitable for patients with a meningioma (a usually benign tumor of the meninges).

When should you see a doctor immediately?

Call emergency services immediately on 112 (Switzerland: 144) if:

  • sudden chest pain or shortness of breath
  • one side of the body suddenly becomes weak or numb, or speech or vision problems occur
  • Swelling of the face, lips or throat and difficulty breathing.

You should promptly seek medical attention for pain or swelling in one leg, yellowing of the skin or eyes, migraine-like headaches for the first time, a lump in the breast, and vaginal bleeding after the first few months of treatment or after discontinuation.

Getting through menopause successfully

Consciously shaping everyday life

Not every woman needs hormones during menopause. Daily life also influences how severely symptoms are experienced. A symptom diary can help identify patterns, such as hot flashes after alcohol, spicy food, or during stressful periods. Be sure to also note any bleeding, as this information is important for medical monitoring. Many women also find relaxation techniques like breathing exercises or yoga helpful in managing hot flashes and restless nights.

  • Layered clothing, a cool bedroom, and breathable bedding
  • Regular exercise with strength training for the bones and a healthy body weight
  • Abstaining from smoking and drinking little alcohol also relieves the strain on the heart and blood vessels.
