These forms require prompt consultation with a dermatologist; if fever, chills, or weakness occur, go to an emergency room immediately. The doctor will decide on further treatment.
  3. 3 Consult a doctor beforehand if large areas of skin, or especially the face or genital area, are affected. Dovobet is applied to a maximum of 30% of the body surface and not to the face or genital area. For extensive psoriasis, light therapy or systemic treatments may be considered, under dermatological supervision. The doctor will decide.
  4. 4 Consult a doctor beforehand if you have a skin infection or a calcium imbalance. Dovobet is not suitable for skin infections, open wounds, acne, rosacea, or a known calcium imbalance. Please indicate in the questionnaire if you are taking other cortisone preparations, other medications containing calcipotriol, undergoing light therapy, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. What you should know about psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common, chronic, and non-contagious skin condition. Topical treatments can alleviate symptoms but do not replace dermatological care in cases of extensive or altered disease.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition in which the immune system stimulates skin cells to divide rapidly. The skin then regenerates in a few days instead of approximately four weeks. Typical symptoms include:

  • Sharply defined, reddened and slightly raised patches with silvery-white scales
  • Preferred areas include elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
  • Itching and, in some sufferers, spots or discoloration of the nails

The disease is not contagious and often progresses in flare-ups. A hereditary predisposition plays a role. Possible triggers include infections, stress, skin injuries, smoking, alcohol, and certain medications.

How does the treatment work?

Mild to moderate psoriasis is usually treated topically. Dovobet combines two modes of action:

  • Calcipotriol a derivative of vitamin D that slows down the excessively rapid division of skin cells
  • Betamethasone: a potent cortisone that reduces inflammation

The medication is applied thinly once daily and used for a limited time. Psoriasis is not yet curable, but the lesions can recede under treatment. For extensive psoriasis, light therapy or systemic treatments may be considered, under the supervision of a dermatologist.

Side effects and cautions

Itching is common in the treated areas, and scaling may also occur with the ointment. Occasionally, burning, redness, skin irritation, inflammation of the hair follicles, or a worsening of psoriasis may occur. After applying the gel to the scalp, light or gray hair may temporarily turn yellowish.

Dovobet is not suitable for use in cases of pustular or erythrodermic psoriasis, skin infections, acne, rosacea, thin skin, wounds, and calcium imbalances. It is not suitable for use on the face or genital area, and should only be used on skin folds after medical consultation.

More than 15 g per day or more than 30% of the body surface area can increase calcium levels and enhance the effects of cortisone in the body.

Warning signs: When immediate help is needed

Rarely does psoriasis develop into a severe form, for example after discontinuing cortisone. Call emergency services immediately on 112 (Switzerland: 144) if:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, or throat
  • Shortness of breath occurs

Extensive skin reddening or numerous pustules accompanied by fever, chills, or weakness warrant immediate medical attention at an emergency room. Signs of a skin infection, such as pus or yellowish crusts, excessive thirst with frequent urination, nausea or muscle weakness (due to high blood calcium levels), visual disturbances, and painful or swollen joints, should be promptly evaluated by a doctor.

Daily life with psoriasis

Focus on skin and triggers

Besides the treatment itself, everyday life can influence the course of the disease. Many sufferers notice that certain triggers promote flare-ups, such as infections, stress, or minor skin injuries. Regular photos of the affected areas help to identify changes and also provide a good basis for discussion with the doctor. When using gels or ointments, it's helpful to note the amount used per week to ensure the maximum dosage is not exceeded.

  • Use a fragrance-free, replenishing moisturizer regularly, separately from treatments.
  • Avoid scratching, rubbing, and wearing tight clothing on the affected areas.
  • Quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight can have a positive effect on the course of the disease.
