What you should know about vaginal yeast infections

Vaginal yeast infections are common and usually easily treatable. It's important to ensure that the symptoms are actually caused by a yeast infection.

Vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis) are usually caused by the yeast Candida albicans. These yeasts are naturally present in many women and multiply when the balance of the vaginal flora is disrupted, for example, after taking antibiotics, during hormonal changes, in cases of diabetes, or when the immune system is weakened.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Itching and burning in the genital area
  • whitish, crumbly discharge
  • Redness and swelling of the labia, as well as pain during urination or sex.

Treatment options

Vaginal yeast infections can be treated locally with vaginal tablets or vaginal cream, or with an oral antifungal medication.

Fluconazole 150 mg: The medication is usually taken once for an acute infection and works via the bloodstream. For recurrent infections, the doctor may prescribe a longer-term treatment.

Clotrimazole (Canesten Gyno): On 3 consecutive evenings, a vaginal tablet or an applicatorful of vaginal cream is inserted deep into the vagina, not during menstruation.

Treatment of the partner is usually only necessary if he himself has symptoms, such as redness or itching of the glans.

Fluconazole: Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, skin rash, or elevated liver enzymes. Rarely, severe allergic reactions, skin reactions, or liver damage occur. Fluconazole affects the metabolism of many medications, such as blood thinners, certain cholesterol-lowering drugs, and medications that affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation).

Clotrimazole: Possible side effects include burning, itching, redness, or irritation of the vagina. Latex condoms and diaphragms may be unreliable during treatment and for up to 5 days afterward. Clotrimazole may increase blood levels of tacrolimus or sirolimus.

Maintaining a balanced vaginal flora

A healthy vaginal flora largely protects itself: Lactic acid bacteria create a slightly acidic environment in which fungi struggle to multiply. Excessive intimate hygiene can disrupt this balance, as can the use of antibiotics.

  • Cleanse the intimate area with clear water or a mild, fragrance-free wash lotion and avoid intimate sprays and vaginal douches.
  • Wear breathable underwear, for example made of cotton, change wet swimwear quickly and avoid panty liners with a plastic layer if possible.
  • Wipe from front to back after using the toilet.

If you have diabetes, well-controlled blood sugar can reduce the risk of recurring yeast infections. Vaginal yeast infections are not considered a classic sexually transmitted infection.
